We spend the first part of life trying to take off.
Education. Career. Business. Marriage. Family. A home.
We climb. We build. We try to soar.
And much later in life, we hope to make a good, comfortable, soft landing.
The flight plan
When we're young, much of the flight plan and runway is prepared for us. Parents. Teachers. Mentors. Institutions.
But once we're up in the air, we're flying on your own. You can feel like you're cruising — and not notice you're drifting.
And good landings rarely happen by accident. They need to be prepared for. They too need a clear runway at the destination you want to reach.
That's why 40–50 may be the most consequential decade of our lives.
Not because life begins at 40. You're already flying. But because by 40, your instrument panel has enough data points to properly assess your flight.
And you might not like everything you see.
- You could be carrying too much weight or running low on fuel.
- Maybe you're flying too fast — and in the wrong direction.
That's why we often talk about a midlife crisis.
But perhaps 40 is less about crisis and more about clarity.
A powerful reminder
For Muslims, 40 is a powerful reminder to consider our own flight plan.
At 40, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the first revelation and began his prophetic mission.
And our flight plan? It's there at the opening of the Qur'an. Built into the fabric of our lives. Recalled in the five daily prayers.
Surah al-Fātiḥa.
Yet even as Muslims, we can miss the practical framework within it.
Seven verses. An entire flight plan for life.
TAKE-OFF — (1) We begin in the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. We are taught how to launch, and in whose name.
COORDINATES — (2) All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds. We are given our orientation: who is ultimately in control, and where we are headed.
FUEL — (3) The Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful. We are reminded that mercy fuels the journey.
CARGO — (4) Master of the Day of Judgement. We are reminded to be conscious of what we carry, for we will be held accountable.
CONTROL TOWER — (5) You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. We establish our connection with the One we serve, and from whom we seek help throughout the journey.
FLIGHT PLAN — (6) Guide us to the straight path. Because even when you're flying high, you can still drift.
LANDING — (7) The path of those whom You have blessed, not those who have earned anger or have gone astray. Different paths. Different outcomes.
So no, I don't believe life begins at 40. But perhaps your mission does.
And while you still have runway, maybe it's time to look again at your flight plan.
