By this stage of life, people increasingly come to us for answers.
We solve problems. Make decisions. Carry responsibilities.
But are we becoming so busy answering everyone else's questions that we've stopped asking our own?
- Am I still heading in the right direction?
- What have I been postponing?
- What needs to change?
- What does success look like for the next chapter — not the last one?
And perhaps the biggest question:
What is my mission now?
Something important about this stage
There is something particularly important about this stage of life.
By 40, we have something we didn't have at 20.
Evidence.
We've lived enough to see which decisions worked — and which didn't. We've accumulated experience, relationships, responsibilities, successes, mistakes and scars. We know ourselves better.
But hopefully, we also still have something incredibly valuable:
Runway.
Time to act on what we've learned.
Yet this is often the stage when we give ourselves the least space to think.
The danger after 40
The danger after 40 isn't that we stop building. It's that we become too busy living what we've built to question where it's taking us.
And I think men, particularly, need more spaces to have these conversations. Not because we can't — but because we rarely make the time or space.
That's why I created Living the Fātiḥa
A small four-night retreat in Marrakech this November, limited to just 14 men.
Not simply to get away.
To deliberately step away.
To pause. Take stock. Have some of the conversations we don't have often enough. And think seriously about the next chapter.
And we'll use something Muslims already carry with us every day as our framework:
Surah al-Fātiḥa.
